But the relationship is more complicated than a simple switch that turns the vagus nerve on.
Cold exposure affects several parts of your autonomic nervous system, and your response depends on the type of exposure, breathing, immersion, and even whether your face enters the water.
What Is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve is one of the body's major communication pathways between the brain and internal organs.
It plays an important role in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is involved in functions such as heart rate regulation, digestion, and recovery.
The parasympathetic system is often associated with “rest and digest.”
The sympathetic nervous system, meanwhile, is more closely associated with alertness and the fight-or-flight response.
Cold exposure can involve both systems at different stages.
The First Response Is Not Relaxation

What Happens to Heart Rate?
Cold immersion can produce competing cardiovascular effects.
Initially, cold exposure can increase sympathetic activity, heart rate, and blood pressure.
At the same time, facial cooling and immersion can stimulate parasympathetic activity through the diving response.
The balance between these responses depends on the conditions and the individual.
This is another reason not to reduce cold exposure to one simple physiological effect.
Your cardiovascular system is responding dynamically.
Breathing Matters
Your breathing can dramatically change the experience.
The initial cold shock can cause a gasp or rapid breathing. Regaining control of your breathing can help you remain calm while the initial response settles.
That is one reason deliberate breathing is often paired with cold exposure.
But breath-holding is different.
Holding your breath during cold immersion can add another physiological stressor and should not be assumed to make a cold plunge more beneficial.
Does Cold “Reset” the Vagus Nerve?
That phrase is popular, but it is too simplistic.
Cold exposure does not simply reset your vagus nerve like restarting a device.
What we can say is that cold water, particularly facial cooling and immersion, can influence autonomic activity and cardiac vagal responses.
That is a more accurate description of what is happening.

The value of understanding the vagus nerve is not finding another reason to chase extreme cold.
It is understanding why the experience changes from the moment you enter the water to the moment you step out.
